Introduction to Artificial Intelligence

One of the example of everyday uses of AI is “Virtual Assistant” like Siri or Google Assistant, which helps us in many ways such as answering questions, setting reminders or even playing music. 

Types of Artificial Intelligence

AI can be categorized into different types based on their capabilities and the extent of human-like intelligence they exhibit. The main categories of AI include Narrow or Weak AI, General or Strong AI, and Artificial Superintelligence.

   1. Narrow or Weak AI:

  • Narrow AI, also known as Weak AI is a type of AI that is designed to perform a specific task or to solve a particular problem.
  • It is created to do one task really well like recognizing faces, playing chess and filtering spam emails.
  • It cannot do tasks outside of its programming.
  • Examples:- Voices assistants like Siri or Alexa, recommendation systems like Netflix or Youtube.

  2. General or Strong AI:

  • General AI, also referred to as Strong AI or Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), is the type of artificial intelligence that aims to perform ay task a human can do. It doesn’t focus on any specific task like current AI systems. It can understand and learn itself and apply knowledge across different areas just like humans.
  • It can learn new new things from experience and can apply that knowledge to solve different problems much like humans. We can say that it could learn itself and own its abilities.
  • General AI doesn’t exist yet. Researchers are working on creating General AI in the future.

  3. Artificial Superintelligence (ASI):

  • Artificial Superintelligence is a hypothetical form of AI that surpasses human intelligence and capabilities across all domains and activities. ASI would not only outperform humans in cognitive tasks but could potentially possess creativity, emotional intelligence, and problem-solving abilities beyond human capacity.
  • ASI remains a theoretical concept and has not been achieved yet. Its potential implications, both beneficial and concerning, have sparked debates and discussions in the AI community and society at large.
How does AI work ?

AI systems works/functions by processing of large amounts of data, identifying patterns and then it makes predictions based of algorithms. In general terms, we can say that AI works on Data Processing and makes decisions based on it.

The key technologies which enable AI include :

  1. Machine Learning(ML) :- Machine learning allows systems to learn from data without being explicitly programmed which uses algorithms to make predictions or decisions.
  2. Deep Learning :- Deep learning is nothing but a subset of machine learning, which uses neural networks with many layers to analyze data in more complex ways. It is used in applications such as image recognition and language translation. 
  3. Natural Language Processing(NLP) :- Natural Language Processing allows machines to understand and respond to human language. Such applications of NLP are virtual assistants like Alexa and chatbots.
  4. Computer Vision :- AI systems that analyze and interpret visual from the data from the world such as recognizing faces in images or detecting any objects in videos.
Applications and Uses of Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence covers a wide range of applications across different industries for different purposes or their specialization in that field. Some key areas include:

  1. Healthcare : AI assists in diagnosing diseases, predicting patient outcomes and also it personalize treatment plans. IBM Waston is an example of AI which helps doctors to make fast and more accurate decisions.
  2. Finance : In Finance sector, AI is used in Fraud detection and Risk management.
  3. E-commerce : AI powers recommendation systems on platforms like Amazon and Netflix which helps companies providing personalized shopping and entertainment experiences.
